Wrapped Up In A Big Violet Bow
September 13th, 2021
Finally gettin’ around here to posting the images taken for a newborn baby shoot, done four weeks ago, when the young lass was a fresh eleven days old of bein’ out in this here life/world. I didn’t get them all edited and done until three weeks ago… but still, a long time for me to get them up here… just been busy, and preoccupied.
All images were taken in their living room, using only natural light coming in through the windows… well, aside from the half dozen or so taken out on their front porch.
This was my first full-fledged newborn shoot, as well as the youngest… other young’n shoots I have done, they were at least a few months old… her umbilical cord had just fallen off the day prior to this shoot.
She was mostly a peaceful sleeping baby… when she wasn’t, not so peaceful… fussy and hungry… until then fed, and either back to sleep, or then sated and chill… but, mostly fussy or sleepin’… in other words, a typical newborn.
Was a bear to edit, as being a typical newborn, constant movement when awake, hands, arms, flailin’… and with their little Velociraptor claw nails, the poor thing slicin’ and dicin’ her little ol’ face… because, not wanting to have the big ol’ oven mitts on her hands for her shots… so, had to go in and edit out all her scratch marks off her face… the worst bein’ one just to the left of the bridge of her nose, where she drew her own blood 😢.
Early on, also was editing skin tone, to even out blotchy skin, and remove dry skin… but after doin’ a couple of those, that was enough… wasn’t gonna do that for the whole shoot of photos… she’s a new born, newborns have dry skin, newborns have blotchy skin, hell adults do too… so, unless it was too noticeable, or detracting to her, and/or the image, I left such blemishes… aside from the scratch marks, removed them.
I ended up capturing just a little under two hundred shots… ended up, to me, a tenth of that number, being keepers… again, to me, and my critical, discerning photographer’s eye… here are my rough final edit favorites
Ugh... This Being Udderly Adorable Stuff Is Exhausting! I'm spent!

Yep, sorry baby girl, but we are 😊
Yeah, so, that is it.
This shoot was also, by the way, the first real one I have done with the newest, and last, lens purchased – the 16-55mm f/2.8 zoom lens… it fared well. I had the aperture set at f/3.6… but, at some point during the shoot, it got hit and set to a higher one, like f/5.6 or f/6.3, which I didn’t notice until too late… but, didn’t cause any real issues, except maybe having to lower the shutter speed, which led to some shots with some motion blur from the shutter speed being a little too slow for my handheld’ness.
Think my ISO was bumped up to around 800, for the indoor, natural light shooting… no problem either with that… no noticeable noise.
And so that would be it for all the ever-so-exciting technical aspects. Though, guess I could add for a few shots, did use a silver reflector to bounce some light onto the back, shadow side. Oh, and ended up applying Fuji’s Eterna film profile, to flatten the images out, which made it better and easier to edit and adjust the lighting and color of the indoor shots.
Okay, that’s it for all the boring tech shooting talk. Though could say that the last two shots here, were actually taken with my phone.
With Autumn wonderfully approaching, look to do some more shooting, since my whiny ass bitch self will have the fairer outdoor temps to be out in, to go shooting. Also, want to keep trying to get to that ‘Apart / A Part’ photo series that I have been mentioning all flippin’ year of meaning to get to and do.
Alright, wishin’ you all well… hopin’ that you are stayin’ healthy and safe. All the best to you, and happy shooting!
